Kennex 38’ Hybrid Catamaran
ASC is retrofitting a Kennex 38 Catamaran
It’s time has come! The electric propulsion systems for pleasure craft have evolved into the ability to make a catamaran of the 38’ length to be placed into the electric propulsion world of the large cruise ships. For over two decades large cruise ships have been electric, our submarine fleet was electric as early as world war two. But when it was downsized and experimented with many inventors stumbled, at great expense, to create confusion among the marine specialists like Nigel Calder and Dave Tether. These men are pioneers and I have been closely involved with their work since 2005. In the year 2001 the first system was placed on a Lagoon 410 owned by Dennis & Denise English. This boat is now owned by Bruce Wilson after he sailed it from Tortolla, BVI to New Orleans. He will leave for Australia next year with his family. This is only one example of the evolution and consistency of the systems that we will have installed on the Kennex 38.
Below is one video showing the Kennex 38, in it’s present state, and the links to addition EMotion Hybrids Videos and information. The links will describe the installed systems that will be used on on the Club’s flagship of future electric sailboats.
The retrofit will make the Kennex a full hybrid system. It will have 15‘x15’ of a hard bimmini made up of solid solar panels, A diesel DC Genset not an AC one, Two 4.5KW motors and approximately 12 batteries with large capacity 144v DC. Additionally to prepare for club “group sails” a new trampoline, and many other items will need to be replaced or fixed. Our anticipated availability date is April 2010 from either Pensacola, Fort Myers, or Key Largo as that is yet to be determined. The retrofit would increase the ability to bring a new perspective to the club, help establish us as a green organization and make sailing adventures ones to remember.
